In cases where visibility of a traffic light is impaired by excessive background light, we recommend the use of our standard glass fibre black background screens with 50mm white borders. Background screens are lightweight and rigid due to their concave design and meet the requirements of the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual and SABS 1459 – 1988. The following schedule and illustrations show the standard configuration available.

AUTOMOTOR
MK V TRAFFIC LIGHTS
CONSTRUCTION
From experience gained over more than four decades of traffic light manufacture in South Africa, we have combined all the best features of the previous models, including the successful Automotor Mk IV aluminium signal head, to give you the Automotor Mk V traffic light.
The lights are of robust construction, mainly from UV stabilized Nylon 66, eliminating corrosion and cracking as well as distortion due to prolonged exposure to the harsh climatic conditions encountered in Africa. Critical components such as mounting bosses, catches, hinges and connecting plates are made of stainless steel ore aluminium, given the excessive mechanical strain on these components.
Bezzles for incandescent lights have hot dip galvanized steel re-enforcing rings on the inner periphery to ensure a good seal, even at the high temperatures generated by the combination of a 75 watt incandescent lamp and high ambient temperatures. Modular construction allows parts of the unit to be replaced to facilitate maintenance.

STATUTORY APPROVAL
The Automotor Mk V traffic light meets the requirements of SABS 1459 – 1988 and has been successfully tested by the SABS for compliance.

INCANDESCENT OPTICAL SYSTEM
Each light is separately housed with a parabolic reflector designed to use a 75-watt incandescent traffic control lamp with a 69mm light center. Reflectors are made of anodized aluminium and are securely held in place with a single spring clip. Lenses are U.V. stabilized polycarbonate, with a very high resistance to breakage. “Red Standing Man”, “Green Walking Man” and “Arrow” lenses can be supplied as required.

INCANDESCENT LAMP HOLDERS
Automotor E.S. porcelain lamp holders of the best quality, using aluminium and phosphor bronze inserts.

VISORS
Easily replaceable U.V. stabilized flexible polythene visors are supplied, which will not damage if vehicles brush against them.

WIRING
Wiring is done with P.V.C. insulated flexible copper wire. Colour coded leads are brought out in an 18mm flexible P.V.C. tube and can be connected to the cables through an Automotor Type Z3 Pole Top Terminal Box.

MOUNTING
Traffic lights can be supplied with universal pole mounting straps to fit poles from 70 to 165 mm diameter. Mounting bosses are fitted with setscrews and therefore have no thread exposed to the weather, further facilitating maintenance. Brackets to mount the heads side by side can also be supplied.

SIGNAL
Traffic lights can be supplied in units of one, two, three, four or five aspects, suitable for mounting on standard traffic signal poles or overhead suspension brackets.

FINISH
Pigmented nylon or chemically etched matt black on aluminium components.

HALOGEN TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Under conditions where mist , early morning or late afternoon sunlight make it imperative to use very bright traffic lights, we recommend the use of Automotor Mark V Halogen Signals. These lights are approximately twice as bright as the incandescent type.

HALOGEN OPTICAL SYSTEM
Each light is separately housed with a deep parabolic reflector designed to use a 50-watt 10V quartz halogen lamp. Reflectors are rigidly mounted in the bezzle with the lens and are securely held in place with four off-centre clips. The reflector is also fitted with a matt black anti-phantom light reflected from outside sources such as sunlight.

HALOGEN LAMPHOLDERS
Halogen reflectors are equipped with robust aluminium lamp holders, which act as a heat sink. Lamp holders have corrosion proof spring clips, which maintain their spring qualities even at high temperatures over extended periods.

TRANSFORMERS
Halogen traffic lights are fitted with adequately rated 230V/10V double wound transformers mounted in separate housings behind each signal. Transformers are not accessible from the lamp compartment, thus facilitating safety whilst replacing lamps. The housing also includes an exposed ribbed aluminium heat sink mounted against the transformer laminations for maximum efficiency.
